Sports & Entertainment in The Lakewood Area

The Strand Theater

In 1922, architect Thomas W. Lamb was commissioned by the Ferber Amusement Co. to build a theater in Lakewood, a quality resort location, as a "try out" town before moving a show to New York. Architecturally, the sight lines are exemplary, with no obstructing pillars or uprights. Also, the acoustics are notably effective since it was built at a time when performers relied on their own unamplified voices. There were several Broadway try-outs for the 1922-1923 season, but owners of the Strand were victims of Lakewood's sudden rapidly declining winter population as vacationers began to flock to the citrus belt.

The future of the Strand lay with the highly popular combination of vaudeville and films interspersed with an occasional booking of a Broadway show. For the next few years, the Strand's bill changed twice weekly and the theater became a centerpiece for those who preferred their entertainment on the light and frothy side backed by the latest Hollywood release. Among those who appeared at the Strand as virtual unknowns were: Ray Bolger, Milton Berie, Ruby Keeler and George Burns & Gracie AllenWhen sound came to the movie industry, the "talkies" hit the Strand and it became exclusively a motion picture theater. Later, as suburban movie complexes proliferated and as competition from television increased and costs soared, the Strand began a slow slide toward oblivion.
